About this place
There is an undeniable, childlike excitement in seeing a platter crowded with a hamburger steak, deep-fried prawn, fried fish, and Japanese fried chicken. Standing along a roadside in Yawata, Kyoto Prefecture, Hyakkaen captures the unpretentious charm of a mid-century Showa-era drive-in. The headliner here is the Jumbo Bento, a bountiful plate that brings together various fried items, small sausages, ketchup-seasoned spaghetti, and salad to showcase the full appeal of classic Western-influenced Japanese diner fare. The menu offers an extensive range of lunch platters to suit different appetites and cravings, including the Special Lunch with skewered pork cutlets and the affordable Hyakkaen Lunch.
Beyond the generous combination platters, the à la carte classics hold their own appeal. The hamburger steak has a satisfyingly firm, meaty chew coated in rich demi-glace, presented in traditional style alongside a fried egg and pasta. The omurice, served with soup, draws loyal regulars for its gentle, comforting flavour, and ordering a retro-style custard pudding makes for a delightfully simple, sweet finish to the meal.
Having drawn notice as a filming location, the restaurant is arranged with a U-shaped counter and table seating, making it equally welcoming for solo diners or small lunch groups. Free parking is available on-site for those arriving by car. Service runs primarily during lunch hours, with regular closures on Fridays and Sundays.
